June 20, 2008

I recently wrote this to a Facebook fan of the show and thought it was worth showing anyone who would read it.

Personally I hate Alex more than I hate Giana and Trevor. I think Alex is more gutless than Bobby Petrino, at least Petrino makes is own decisions. Also he’s a liar and two-faced. He made a pact with Amanda and later broke it. Not mention to refuse to give Amanda repsect when she gave him the front page. What can you tell me to change mind? Other than she annoying, control freak, and attention needy I think I see your point. MTV did show that about Amanda. The show needed conflict and got it with you and your friends unwilling gave them the ammo they needed. Doesn’t that mean that you and Alex won’t be friends again with Amanda? Not too late to at least call a truce. Also what college are you going to?
MTV showed about 4 months of edited footage out of 3 years of built up disdain from the staff towards Amanda. Alex is certainly no saint and has pulled stunts that were dick both as an editor and a friend.  In the end though, he is an amazing journalist and tell me how many times MTV documented that?  But Amanda is a whole different story. I have never been an editor but my opinion has always been valued by the staff and I always heard both sides of the story before I judge, and quite frankly Amanda was a shit leader. The way she was portrayed draws pity from viewers, that is undeniable. But in the end all this is just a TV show that poorly portrays high school journalists feelings towards their superior instead of excelling in journalism as all of us had. This show has nothing do with journalism and is only a tool MTV used to draw viewers who have not fulfilled their addiction to pointless reality-show conflict.
Fuck what ever you think about Alex Angert, you really want a two-faced, lying, backstabber to hate? Try MTV, who had a real chance at bringing the under-appreciated, and important subject of journalism to millions of young viewers only to trade it in for a waste of time show about successful, smart, passionate, bitching teens. Minus the smart, successful, and passionate part. Because seriously who would want watch that?
And I’m going to Santa Fe Community College.

Week 4 of THE PAPER- My Take

May 15, 2008

This week’s episode was ugly. I got screwed, Alex looked bad, and Adam looked like a little bitch. Of course when it comes to what i had to do about the humor column I regret nothing. I was promised the first two issues and I didn’t get them. I’ve heard some people ask why should I get a column at all, I’m not an editor. While it’s valid to say that, I guess the back story should clear up doubts.

Last year I wrote my first ever column, of course a humorous one. Sure enough, that column goes on to win an FSPA all-state column award. I go to Ms. Weiss and ask for a monthly humor, she say thats a great idea but you should go ask if a majority of editorsare okay with it too. They agree. So great, I think the next year I will get the monthly column.

Summer rolls on , and I get a phone call from Giana one morning saying I should go to the editor’s meeting  because they might be scrapping the humor column. So I go there is a big argument, but most of the editors defend my humor column, and the two issue agreement is struck.

Giving Amanda the column in the first was a mistake, but to many people especially Giana, Cassia, and Charesse fought harrd for me to keep the column just for it to be given away. Besides at this point I’ve been screwed enough, I felt no sympathy for taking back my column from Amanda, after all her Journalism career has been fabulous, and although mine hass been pretty good too, I could have used a boost more than her.

Sure enough in the end I got screwed, but there’s been worse things to happen, I just wish Alex would have stepped up for me, but it doesn’t matter, Alex and I are still cool, and I got write two more columns, each of them are really good, and I wrote snother for a  magazing the Circuit did for the first time ever, called The Outlet. Again this year I won an FSPA all-state collumn award, I feel solidifying the fact I’m pretty good at writing columns.

As for the way my good friends Giana and Trevor have been portrayed thus far, it’s not that they don’y feel that way about Amanda, it’s hard to explain but MTV does a poor job showing why they feel the way they do. You dont’ see  thier point of veiwand you don’t really get to see the side of Amanda that drives everyone crazy. On top of that Amanda is always shown at home talking about how bad she feels about herself at home, drawing sympathy from the audience while Trevor and Gianaare only shown bitching, and if thy’re vision of Amanda was shown (annoying, controlling, attention thirsty) and then they got to speak thier two cents this would be a whole different show, and people would love Trev and G and hate Amanda. Unfortunatley thier is no way for this show to display everyone’s point of view, and the point of view they constantly show is Amanda’s, leaving Trevor and Giana looking like bastards, which reall thier not.

Any ways the show was pretty good this week, and in the real newspaper class room we just finished our last deadline, and as usual, Adam was screaming, Amanda was controlling and annoying, Giana was pissed at her, Trevor was flat out pissed because his double truck got messed with, Alex did a killer job, and Cassia did a great job too.

Oy, that was this week and I’m tired from typing, feel free to comment and give your two cents

Week 3 of The Paper

May 2, 2008

So far the season has been great, The Paper has been getting great feed back and ratings. This past week’s episode featured my good friend, Alex, and me as we practiced with the football team, celebrated my birthday and went to the Dave Matthews Band concert. It was an exciting episode for me as I did my first nude scene on national television. I’ve been getting a ton of Facebook friend requests and everyone who contacts me has been very nice; one kid even posted a link on a Facebook fan club for me of a blog he wrote about how he wishes he could be my friend. Yesterday I went to a TV studio to film a segment for a talk show about The Paper. I’m not sure what station it was for (CNN I think) or when it will air but it was the second time I’ve been on a talk show and it was pretty cool. Most of the students at my school enjoy the show too, one girl who walked into me in the hallway freaked out when she realized who I was and pretty much raped me with compliments. I later gave her an MTV backpack and she told me that I just made her life.
The official Circuit website is also up and functional so you can check real writing by cast members from the show at cypressbaycircuit.com.  Soon I will get some of my own work for the Circuit and I’ll also post some original pieces I’ve written! My ‘Dive into the Bay’ webisodes are also up on thepaper.mtv.com so check them out as I spend a day with my school’s ROTC squad and meet some of the school’s staff with Alex. And don’t forget to check out episode four of The Paper, Monday at 10:30 on MTV!

All-State again!

April 21, 2008

For the second year in a row I have been awarded All-Florida columns by the Florida Scolastic Press Assoctiation! It was icing on the cake for me, and I feel like I can offically call my high school journalism career successful. And episode two of the ”The Paper” is on tonight at 10:30 on MTV.

World Premiere

March 31, 2008

The World Premiere for the Paper was held on Thursday, and it was AMAZING. It was a Red Carpet event and it was held here in Weston at Muvico 24. Sour Patch sponsored it, and asked me to host it, so on April 14th you’ll see a few promo spots of me with the other stars of the show promoting it. The whole night went great because on top of the whole red carpet, MTV showed episode 1 and 3 of The Paper. The response from the audience was fantastic, everyone really enjoyed the show. The general consesus is that the show is hilarious, and a few people even said I was there favorite character, which was nice to hear. I feel the show is going to be great so make sure to tune in and watch, remember it’ll be on MTV at 10:30pm right after the Hills on April 14th!

New York Times yo

March 12, 2008

If you don’t know me, then hello there, I’m Dan Surgan. Coming April 14 MTV will be airing a new ‘groundbreaking’ documentary series titled The Paper. I’m one of the seven main characters who’s been filmed as I help make my high school newspaper known as the Circuit. The New York Times wrote a story on Sunday about the show with a big cast photo, it’s friggin’ awsome so check it out!  We’re also in this month’s J-14 so look out for that too.
